Our featured Newsletter Article:
SALVIA DIVINORUM (SAL-VIA DIV-VEN-OR-UM)
Continued from our last newsletter
Just what is Salvia and why is it so popular?
Well first off Salvia Divinorum is a type of sage known as Genus Salvia.
There over 1000 species of sage, however, Salvia Divinorum is the only
type of sage that is known to induce visions. The effects Salvia Divinorum
are vastly different from Marijuana and is often confused as being similar
to it or smoked recreationally like it. It is nothing at all like
marijuana and doesn't even come close to the same effects. While it does
impair coordination it also produces visions so it is extremely important
not to operate machinery or do anything that could cause danger to
yourself or others under the influence of Salvia.
So why is Salvia Divinorum so popular?
The main chemical substance that is responsible for the visions created by
Salvia is Salvinorin-A. It not an alkaloid; it is a
neoclerodane-diterpenoid. Therefore, it is not chemically related to any
other psychoactive compound. Although non-addictive, pure Salvinorin is
extremely potent. It is the most potent naturally occurring psychoactive
substance known to man which is why it has gained in popularity over the
years.
Currently there is no known heath risks associated with using Salvia making
it even more popular, yet it is often compared to a mild LSD type of trip
by authorities and governmental agencies like the DEA and by the media.
Salvia is not a stimulant, sedative, narcotic, or tranquilizer. Like other
entheogens, it can and does induce visions, but it works very differently
from every other known entheogen. Until recently, it was not known exactly
how Salvia affected the brain, as Salvinorin-A does not have any actions on
the receptors responsible for the activities of classical hallucinogens.
Salvinorin-A has now been identified as the first known naturally occurring
nonnitrogenous opioid selective agonist. Salvinorin-A is chemically unique,
and is not a chemical analog of any known substance.
Salvia is also a consciousness enhancing herb that has been used for
centuries in vision quests and healing rituals. Salvia when used as it
should, allows one to experience visions. It is an herb with a long
tradition of sacred uses; among these uses is to induce deep meditation. It
can actually be a very insightful and enlightening experience if smoked
while in a quiet, silent, dark, peaceful, secluded setting or in the
outdoors. An option to quiet and silent setting would be to play soft,
tranquil music as a background but not so loud as to be a hindrance or
distraction to your experience. Using Salvia should be taken very seriously
if you are going to have a pleasant Salvia Journey.
In our next newsletter we will go into great detail on the Salvia journey
and learn exactly how to prepare, use and correctly smoke Salvia Divinorum
as our three part series on Salvia concludes.
